The Region

Pieria is one of the most beautiful regionis of Northern Greece. Its symbol is Mount Olympus, the highest mountain of Greece and the land of the Olympian gods. Easterly of mount Olympus you can find the famous beaches of Pieria that each year attract thousands of people.

Platamon Castle

Platamon Castle is a castle-town of the Middle Byzantine period (12th century) that is located southeast of mount Olympus in an strategic area that controls the way between Macedonia, Thessaly and south Greece. The tower, which overlooks the highway, is an imposing medieval fortress.



Dion was an ancient city of strategic importance and one of the most famous Macedonian states. The location of ancient Dion is at the eastern foot of mount Olympus, where now stands the modern town. The city's name is attributed to Jupiter. Every year games by the name "Dia" were organised at the temble of the father of the gods. In Dion were held Olympic Games, victory celebration feasts and sacrifices. The Archaeological Museum of Dion is one of the main attractions of the region.


Litochoro is a town-municipality located in the southern part of Pieria. It is famous for its location in the foothills of mount Olympus, the tallest mountain in Greece. Litochoro is popular for those who wish to start climbing mount Olympus. From Litochoro start all the attempts to reach the top of the mythical mountain. East of the town is the Plaka area, also known as Plaka Litochorou. The beach of Plaka counts numerous restaurants and nightclubs.



Elatochori is a mountainous village belonging to the Pieria prefecture. It is one of the most famous winter resorts in the region and hosts the only ski center in the prefecture.
